Donner Lake and the Summit Tunnels at Donner Pass

Donner Lake (left) and Tunnels 8, 7, & 6 (top to bottom, right) at Donner Summit on the original 1868 Central Pacific RR Sierra grade. After taking over the Southern Pacific in the early 1990's, the UPRR abandoned this Track #1 portion of the grade (between Norden and Eder) in 1993 for "economic" reasons and removed the track. To cross the summit all traffic now travels on Track #2 through the nearby 2-mile long Tunnel #41 (also called the "Big Hole") which was completed by the SP in 1923.
